Fast Home Charging Without Automatically Upgrading Your Electrical Service

Tesla Wall Connector can provide up to 48 amps / 11.5 kW of Level 2 charging when installed on an appropriately designed 60-amp circuit and when both the vehicle and home's electrical system support that output.

Maximum charger capability does not mean every installation should automatically be configured for 48 amps. Vehicle charging capability and available household electrical capacity must also be considered.

When full-output charging is not appropriate, Wall Connector can be configured for a lower charging output.

Tesla Wall Connector

A hardwired Level 2 charging solution with a NACS charging connector. It integrates with the Tesla app, supports indoor or outdoor installation and can provide up to 48 amps when the vehicle and electrical system support it.

Best suited for

Tesla vehicles; NACS-equipped vehicles when compatible; permanent home charging; households primarily using NACS.

Universal Wall Connector

Universal Wall Connector combines NACS charging with an integrated J1772 adapter, making it a flexible option for households that may charge both Tesla and non-Tesla electric vehicles.

Best suited for

Mixed-EV households; Tesla + J1772 vehicles; homeowners who want flexibility for future vehicles.

Neither product guarantees a particular charging rate for every EV. Actual charging rate depends on the vehicle's onboard charging capability and available electrical power.

What Does a 48-Amp Tesla Wall Connector Installation Require?

A 48-amp continuous charging load is typically supplied by an appropriately designed 60-amp dedicated circuit. Because EV charging is a continuous electrical load, circuit sizing must account for the required 125% continuous-load factor.

Before recommending 48 amps, evaluate:

  • Electrical service capacity
  • Existing household demand
  • Panel condition
  • Breaker space
  • Circuit distance
  • Charger specifications
  • Vehicle charging capability
  • Wiring route

The vehicle's charging capability is part of that review. Do not assume every Tesla vehicle accepts 48 amps.

Charging More Than One EV at Home

Homes with two EVs do not necessarily need two completely independent maximum-output charging circuits. Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connectors support Group Power Management, allowing multiple compatible Wall Connectors to share available electrical capacity.

The appropriate configuration depends on the electrical service, daily driving needs, charger locations and available power.

Tesla currently supports Group Power Management for up to six Gen 3 Wall Connectors. That does not mean every household needs six chargers or one shared circuit.

Auto Charge Pros prefers concealed wiring through accessible framing, basements, ceilings, attics and unfinished spaces when practical instead of automatically running exposed conduit across finished walls.

If drywall access is required, anticipated openings are discussed before installation whenever practical. Where included in the written estimate, removed drywall can be fastened back after the required electrical work and inspection. Full finishing—including tape, compound and sanding—is available separately when requested.
